What could happen if numerous churches were to collaborate for a common purpose greater than promoting our individual churches? Christmas on 84th Street is the first attempt by 3 churches, joining together to create an environment where the presence of Christ is experienced and responding to the needs of those less fortunate. That’s what Christmas is all about!

What is Christmas on 84th Street

Music, camels, Handel, shepherds, jazz, the manger… Christmas on 84th Street pairs the sites, smells and sounds of 1st century Bethlehem with Handel’s Messiah, big band music, and an opportunity to impact people in need in the Lincoln community. Sponsored by 3 churches, we need two locations to contain our “gift to Lincoln.”

At First Free, you will experience the ancient town of Bethlehem alive with shepherds, animals, street merchants, tax collectors, and Roman soldiers. You’ll approach the manger and experience what it was like on that miraculous night 2000 years ago.

Experience “Sounds of the Season” at New Covenant Community Church. Enjoy big band Christmas carols in Let Heaven and Nature Swing, featuring members from all three churches and UNL faculty. On alternating nights, listen to the rich choral tradition of Handel’s Messiah as performed by choral members from all three churches.

Just down the hall from the musical venue is the Gifts with a Mission Christmas store, a compelling opportunity to give to people in need in our community. Located in New Cov’s Flipside Auditorium, the Gifts with a Mission store is in cooperation with these local agencies: Good Neighbor Center, Lincoln Crisis Pregnancy Center, Fresh Start and Young Lives.

Both locations invite you to join us in our community areas for cookies, coffee, hot cocoa, and a warm place to visit before heading back out into the December night.
